Struggling with a substance abuse issue can affect a person’s life significantly including home life and family, work, and physically. Drugs and alcohol alter a person’s brain chemistry creating unhealthy pathways in the brain that lead to unhealthy behaviors and decisions.

What types of Substance Abuse Treatment Services Are Available
Depending on your specific situation and needs, a specific level of care would be recommended to help you recover. The levels of care include the following:
Drug and Alcohol Detox: When a person has become chemically dependent on a substance they will experience psychological and physical withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the substances being used. Alcohol and Benzodiazepines typically require a medically monitored detox due to the increased chance for seizures if stopping cold turkey. No matter what substance is being used, it is always best to contact a substance abuse program directly to discuss your specific use and get a recommendation.
Inpatient/Residential: If a person requires an intensive treatment program which removes them from all other life distractions including work, school, and family/friends, a person will enter an inpatient or residential drug and alcohol program for substance abuse. Inpatient and Residential treatment provide treatment during the day, 24 hour supervision, room and board, and stringent rules. A person may stay in this level of care for 30-90 days or longer in some cases.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment: For those who do not require higher levels of care, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may be the best fit for your needs. An IOP program for substance abuse allows you to continue to work or go to school while receiving treatment. If you recently completed detox or a primary inpatient/residential program, IOP is an excellent next step for your recovery plan. If you require additional sober living housing while attending IOP, this option can also be accommodated as well. The more immersed a person becomes in their treatment plan, with more time, the better for their recovery.
