Highly regarded by recovering addicts as the only way to fully recover from a substance-based addiction, the 12 Step Program is has been adopted by many organizations since it was first created by Alcoholics Anonymous back in 1935. The reason the word “recovering” was used was intentional. The method and guidelines within are there to make sure that each participant knows that the journey is a lifelong one. A lifelong road to recovery. Even if you have kicked the habit, you still need to put these steps into effect each and every day to keep on the road to recovery. Phoenix Rising Orange County and our specialists extend to you a warm welcome and hope that if you are suffering from an addiction that you will not try to conquer it on your own. Seek help. We can aid you through this process with a group of people who want to see you succeed.
Revered as one of the best ways to cure addiction and put one’s self on the road to recovery, the 12 Step Program is one of the oldest treatment programs available. Originally created by the founders of the group Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12 Step Program is a way to cleanse the body of addiction by means of a type of spiritual reformation. Although the 12 Step Program often refers to God as the one who can help you with your addiction, many non-religious individuals are able to benefit from this program as well.
Basically, Phoenix Rising Orange County uses this 12 Step Program as a guideline for anyone who has an addiction, whether deeply religious or not. The program emphasizes the presence of God as perceived by the individual, not by a faith necessarily. Phoenix Rising makes a deliberate effort not to infringe on anyone’s beliefs, but to help them find a focal point in ridding themselves of habits that they cannot themselves be rid of.
The twelve steps are as follows:
We admitted we were powerless over our addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Made a list of persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
